Well, the roof is replaced. And the eaves/sofits and the gutters, and a few bits of the siding trim. Energy-efficient white shingles, that will get us an energy tax credit on our next income tax return.

And Fern bunny is fine, after the application of quite a bit of money at the veterinarian.

All of which is to say, we're not going anywhere this summer. No RG in Pittsburgh, sorry M-friends. No Knit and Crochet Show in Buffalo. Nowhere that we can't drive to within a couple of hours and stay at someone's house for free.

We are fixing up the other house for sale, since we haven't had much luck renting it - it goes on the market in a week and a half. A bit of interior paint, repairs to the sidewalk, replace a couple doors, stuff like that. We won't get what we paid for it; we bought it at the peak of the market, and that's not going to come again any time this ten years. But we should clear enough on it, if all goes well, to pay off the mortgage on the current house, replenish savings that were depleted by the new roof, and maybe, just maybe, enough to let us replace the pink bathtub with something we can stand to look at with our glasses on. There's no chance it would be sold and closed on in time to use the money for any of the afore-mentioned summer travel, though.

Anyway, that's what's been happening around here lately. I've gotten in a bit of reading, some crocheting and knitting, and have written some reviews for the Tea Review Blog -check out the blog here:

and a few of my reviews, specifically, here:

And, just so this has a bit more content, a picture of the most recent sweater I finished:

I've already worn this one a couple times and people seem to like the little sunflower, even though [livejournal.com profile] squirrel_magnet says it looks like a large-winged insect has landed on me.

And in other news, we're home again. We left Pittsburgh a bit later than planned, after some last-minute kitten watching. We had to stop in 2 different Giant Eagle supermarkets before finding one that wasn't completely out of Diet Cherry 7-Up, which is sold up there but not down here (the bottler for our area flat-out doesn't make it.) Since we were going to supermarkets, we took the state-highways, non-toll, non-interstate route, which is always fascinating. In fact, the whole drive is fascinating in many ways. One of the things about state highways leading out of large cities is the rather predictable but interesting pattern they follow in what kinds of businesses are on them, and how that tells us a lot sociologically. The change from used auto lots and sleazy "lounges" and biker bars and construction equipment rental and light industrial, till gradually we start getting dentists and credit unions in the mix as we slip from edge of the city into edge of the suburbs, and then we go up through florists and nail salons until we are in full-blown suburbia with supermarkets and Circuit City and other big boxes. The differences in highway signage in different places. The names of towns. Historical markers. Scenery. I much prefer the northeast, where once one is past the suburbs, it's mostly trees with occasional cows, compared to the Southwest, where it's mostly cows with very rare trees. The descent from high altitude is so fast in some places that one's ears pop - big chunk of state highway, winding road, with a 6% grade. Eventually on US Route 40, which is not an interstate in the Interstate Highway System, but is nonetheless an interstate highway, one of the very first, long before IH was a gleam in Eisenhower's eye. 40 overlays some other roads - at one point, I believe we were on IH-68, US-40, and MD-219 simultaneously. 40 eventually hooks up with IH-70, which turned out to have some fairly heavy holiday traffic at a couple points, so we stopped and ate supper at a diner in Frederick, back on 40 after it separates from 70 again for a while. (40 joins/leaves/rejoins IH-70 like that all the way across the country to Colorado.) If one is easily amused, driving this country's middle roads (somewhere between IH's and back roads) is endlessly amusing.

Now we are home, and I have a lot of food to recover from! The critters are all fine; the pet sitter did her thing. And I seem to have a sore throat, which I am doing my best to zinc-and-vitamin out of becoming a cold.

At some point when we have a faster connection, I will describe Thursday's family T-day, but for some reason, everything here has slowed down to a crawl, so I'll save words. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh! You know what Pittburgh has that Baltimore doesn't? Half-Price Books, that's what! A couple of bags of books are now in the car trunk. It's been a beautiful day, sunny and almost September in its temperatures.
One of the cats had an adventure before R & F had a chance to get her spayed, so there are little tiny kittens here, eyes not open yet. Tooooo cute.
We are roasting a turkey even as I speak, and there is stuffing with chestnuts in it, and in a minute I am going to go toss some potatoes with olive oil and rosemary and add them to the oven, after [livejournal.com profile] squirrel_magnet gets back from the supermarket with aluminum foil and potholders. R & F have more of a household than they used to, but it's still a bit short of the number of casserole dishes and stuff needed to make a full dinner. Hint to anyone considering getting [livejournal.com profile] fadethecat and [livejournal.com profile] landley a gift for some occasion or another: they need a set of mixing bowls, and a good cutting board. A couple of Corningware/Pyrex/generic tempered glass casserole dishes for baking stuff in the oven wouldn't hurt, either. Just my opinion.
OK. let's see if this'll post before timing out.
