Not that I've been daily posting anyway, but just so you know. My friend Sallythehoarder was here visiting for 4 days, and while talking, I discovered that her place has filled up again, so I'm going to NY to help her throw out at least enough stuff that a new bed can be delivered. More details about that provided on request. Will have my cell phone with me, so if you know my phone # you can call or text me; if you don't know my # but need to reach me, DM me through my Twitter account, bunrab - well, of COURSE it's bunrab; what else would it be? My next check of email, LJ, and FB will be Saturday 8/29.

Hope everyone else is enjoying the last of summer!

We'll be away for a few days, attending the wedding of a niece in Omaha, which you'll hardly even notice since I've posted so little the past two weeks anyway. I have been working on finishing assorted RL projects - knitted things, quilted things - and also having a cold. Whee. Anyway, when we get back from Omaha next week, I'll try and catch up.
Here is one of the things I knitted:link to pic behind cut )

OK gang, Monday noon we're off for the Baltimore Symphonic Band tour of Eastern Europe. We will be gone July 7-17. A sitter will be taking care of the pets and the house, all that stuff, but she will not be answering our phones. We are not taking our cell phones to Europe; they're the wrong kind. We will, however, be checking our email from internet cafes, once we get to Europe. We're taking the little OLPC XO computer. So if you are trying to get in touch with us, email should get responded to within a couple of days, whereas a phone call will not get returned until the 18th at the earliest.

I probably won't have time to read all of my flist during the trip, though. I'll ask when I get back if there's anything I absolutely have to know that happened to you.

Our friend Cindy-the-librarian will also be checking on things here, and she will have our emergency numbers at the hotels we'll be staying at; she has our flight numbers and times.

If we have your snail address, chances are we'll be sending you a postcard from our travels.

Anyone have anything to tell me right away, comment or email me before 1 a.m. Eastern Daylight time on Monday July 7 (that is, about 9 hours after I post this) and I will get back to you before we leave.

Will have the teeny laptop so I'll be checking email, but I probably won't get a chance to read my entire flist every day.

Wish us luck on the estate sale!

Off to Austin Saturday lunchtime. Will be bringing eensy computer, checking email every other day or so, probably won't be reading all of LJ. The usual. Back Sat evening March 1. Anyone needs me before then, you've got my email, and most of you have my phone number, too.

Knit Kimono by Vicki Squares - yes, this is a book to read, not just knitting patterns. Reviewed at Amazon here.

A Year Without "Made in China" by Sara Bongiorni. Subtitled "one family's true life adventure in the global economy." Amusing. They didn't quite manage to actually get through the year without buying anything made in China, both because Chinese stuff sneaks into other products in insidious ways, and because they have young children.

A Wrongful Death by Kate Wilhelm - latest in her Barbara Holloway series. In the previous volume, I had gotten impatient with Barbara for her endless dithering/whining about her relationships and her career; apparently, the author did too, because in this book Barbara sees a shrink and gets some stuff straightened out. Meanwhile, the mystery plot is good, and it's on the timely topic of medical prostheses.

We got the Christmas tree undecorated and folded up and boxed, but didn't manage to get it back to the storage unit, so the living room floor is a bit crowded at the moment. For some reason, we have the antique button accordion in its case, which Squirrel Magnet has been carrying around from house to house for years, in the living room, as well. And his City of Austin departmental fire warden's cap is on the sofa. I'm not sure how this stuff manages to get into our everyday space so easily. Library books, I understand.

Yesterday we went to the American Visionary Art Museum, for Cindy's birthday. My impression of "visionary art" for a while now has been "stuff made by people who hear voices" and nothing we saw there contradicted that impression. You know, pictures that god told them to draw and to write all over. Some people seemed to be channeling George Washington, King George III, and Jesus simultaneously. Many who had OCD. Fascinating stuff, but - people who hear voices in their heads.

We will be headed back to Texas on Wednesday. We'll be checking email while we're there. We'll be coming back Thursday the 31st. The pet sitter is already looking forward to it - she loves giving the chinchillas their dust bath! And Cindy will be dropping in as well, to play with little Vlad. (That's him in my icon.)

When we get back, I *promise*, pictures of Vlad, and of my latest completed knitting and crochet projects.

[livejournal.com profile] squirrel_magnet's dad just passed away this afternoon. We'll be flying down to TX first thing tomorrow. We'll be checking email but not doing a lot else online (including, sorry, not replying to comments to this post; thank you in advance for your condolences, and I'll thank you properly when we get back) while we're down there, which could be a week to two weeks. So email me if you need to get in touch with me. We'll have our cell phones with us, for those of you who have the #.

I'm going to be up in NY visiting my technophobic friend, helping clean house and playing music. Will not be reading LJ, probably not even answering email. See you all Tuesday evening, when I get back!

No, that's not a guinea pig, it's a soprano saxophone.
As in, I've just purchased a new used one. I seem to be becoming a saxophone collector. It won't help if I promise to use my saxophones only for good, because everyone knows saxophones are intrinsically evil, and the soprano sax is one of the evilest. I am looking forward to playing it.

Geeky details: It's an Antigua. I am far too lazy to look up the year based on the serial number. Included in the price was a Pro-Tec case, making it an even better bargain. I got a C-star mouthpiece to go with it; I tried a couple brands including a VanDoren, but you know, no matter what size sax I'm playing, I guess I like the C-star best. Geez, the price on mouthpieces has gone up.
This does destroy my discretionary budget for a couple months. So I won't be attempting to go to the Pittsburgh Knitting Festival in Feb., nor the RG in New Hampshire. We shall have to see what the budget looks like by April, at which point we also need to decide between (let alone do both) Penguicon and visiting Austin around [livejournal.com profile] squirrel_magnet's birthday and an Austin Symphonic Band event.

In other news, squirrel_magnet picks up the new bike Thursday!! Pictures shall be forthcoming.

Incidentally, I shall be AFK Friday afternoon through Monday night, as I am going to NY to visit a friend and help her out with some stuff, and her computer is cranky, and I am traveling too light to carry a laptop with me.
