Fair Isle around the TOP of knee socks is a bad idea, unless you use elastic yarn or bobbins for several separate sections, so that there are places where the yarn can stretch. Even those stringy marathon runners have calves that are wider than their ankles. This sort of thing is why making one's own socks is catching on.

Dear Dentist:
If you give me a 6:00 appointment and get me into a chair at 6:10, but you're not going to actually get around to me until 6:50, could you at least have one of the staff pop in and say hi every 15 minutes or so, so that I don't suspect that I have been forgotten entirely?
