The overwhelming winner in the "musical cliches for the 4th of july" poll is Armed Forces Salute. Not surprising to me, or to other band members, and at the same time, those of you who don't go to bandshell concerts are probably going "huh?" If you attend big orchestra concerts - on the Lower Colorado with the Austin Symphony, or the Charles with the Boston Symphony - then you expect the 1812 and you don't really think much about the rest. Orchestra concerts are different. Whether Austin or Boston, there undoubtedly would be a John Williams piece somewhere in your orchestra concert. Different set of cliches for orchestra...

Off to lunch. Food, food food food!

(And, incidentally, o comfy comfy mattress! Now that we have had you a week, I still worship the coils you sit on!)

Yep.

The 1812 Overture and the Armed Forces Salute are part of every Independence Day concert by the Arkansas Symphony. Some traditions are very comforting. :)

Armed Forces Salute - meh.

I'm tellin' yah. That thing got old FAST. Let's just say, between that one, America the Beautiful, S&S, and a few others, there are some pieces of music that I'm in no hurry to see again. ;-)

Oh, but see them you will. Next 4th of July. And the one after that. And the one after that. Oh, and maybe a couple extra times if troops come home from Iraq in your area. Like I said, if lightning hits the conductor and a tornado blows away your music, your fingers will still automatically be able to play those pieces...

Luckily, playing in a band is enough fun to get us through those moments. There's always the next Samuel Hazo piece, and maybe a nice rousing round of classic Holst suite!!
