Number of boxes unpacked today: 2
Jun. 19th, 2005 09:05 pmFirst I slept until noon today. Then we went and returned the truck I rented yesterday, and rented a car to replace it. (Story of renting truck follows.)
Then lunch at a diner - I missed diners! I am sure now I'll miss cafeterias, but boy am I glad to be back in diner country! Then Target: cat litter scoop (of course we found the old one as soon as we got home), hooks for the shower curtain we bought Friday night, towel rings, because the apt only has ONE, and it's at the opposite end of the bathroom from the shower, and other miscellany. Home Depot: A clothes rod that fits onto Closet Mail wire shelving - I don't know how these people expected us to hang our clothes - one hanger in each little slot of the wire rack? And lots of those Teflon "magic sliders" for furniture. Then the drug stlre - to refill a couple prescriptions that I had purchased refills for right before we left Austin, but seem to have lost, and to get laundry detergent and the utility knife I had forgotten about at Home Depot. Then home to finish re-assembling animal cages - everycritter is now back in its own large cage instead of the little traveling cages.
The story of the truck: the movers were able to get into the apartment complex - barely, but they could, and were able to park right in front of the door, only having to move three times for cars to get out. The storage unit was another matter, however! They couldn't even get the truck onto that block, let alone into the storage unit parking lot. (53' truck, where normal 18 wheeler is 48 foot, so this was big even as big goes.) So, I went down the street and rented a Budget truck, 24', and then we parked the Allied van and the Budget truck in back of some stores, back to back, and threw everything from the big truck to the small one. Then we drove the small truck over to the storage unit and unloaded everything. By then, the truck rental place was closed, so I had to keep the truck overnight. No problems, rent is same for 24 hours as for 2 or 3. The guys were pretty cheerful about the whole thing, even with having to do the transfer; I gave them a $50 tip however, which may have something to do with it. At least, our storage unit is the one CLOSEST TO THE DOOR which is nice.
There's still lots more to get used to and to tell, but there are other people waiting for this computer. More later!!
