Gaaaaaaahhhhh! It seems as though everything is rushing at us headlong!! How are we going to manage to do everything????
In other news, yarn fondling with
fadethecat yesterday was fun. And we were extremely restrained with purchases! And we came up with - well, mainly Fade came up with - a good analogy to explain why crocheters seem invisible in yarn stores: it's as though one walks into a computer store staffed by Linux geeks and announces loudly that one is looking for a new box for Windows XP. They'll sell you one if you find it, but they're certainly not going to offer advice and encouragement. That's exactly the way it is with knitting vs. crochet - the knitters have this snobbishness toward crocheters. Crochet is too easy, and too practical, and just about anybody can learn it.
I don't understand it myself. I both knit and crochet, and enjoy both equally, and use both about equally. There are some applications where knitting works better, and others where crochet works better, and some where it truly doesn't matter. Both use yarn, both are still crafts that the vast majority of people don't know how to do, so practicers of both can feel pride in their accomplishments. I truly don't see any reason for knitters' snobbishness about crochet, other than the desire to be esoteric and exclusive. So I wind up hanging out mostly with crocheters, who are much less clique-y, much more eager to share everything. And for pete's sake, crochet uses up MORE YARN than knitting - one would think yarn shops would be HAPPY to see crocheters coming in! And encourage them!
Yes, there are local exceptions. No doubt you know some perfectly nice, non-snobby knitters. You are ready to tell me about a LYS that stocks as many crochet books as it does knit, and where the crochet hooks hang at eye level instead of in a little bottom corner hidden beneath the knitting needles. Fine. I'm happy to hear it! Now let's spread it!!
