Rather than garage band. We were bringing another half dozen boxes to the storage unit, which is one of those indoor climate controlled jobbies, and there was a band practicing in a unit a couple spaces away from ours. Seems like a good place to do it - they had their unit fitted out nicely with carpet, stands for all the instruments, microphones, stools to sit on, etc. 10' x 10' is big enough for a 4 piece band, although the drum set does take up quite a bit of space. Well, why not? At that hour on a weeknight, the building is fairly empty anyway, not like Saturdays when everybody is fighting, or at least glaring as hard as they can at each other, over the dollies/carts. So it's a nice resonant space, certainly no worse acoustics than the average club, and a lot cheaper rent than a real studio, plus it provides the space to store amps and speakers and whatnot between gigs. I wonder how many garage bands there are out there, practicing in storage units around the country?

We have about 40 boxes of stuff in storage now. You can begin to see a teeny tiny little dent in the sheer number of books here. When Fade and Rob remove the sofa and several bookcases they're taking, and Anita and Dana remove the bookcases they're taking, you'll really be able to see a difference. My packing will go faster once those large units are out of the way, too.

And we're going to have a yard sale March 19. That should get rid of the loveseat (which unfolds into a twin bed, and which we bought used for $40 about a decade ago), the coffee table (which I bought over 20 years ago, before we got married, and which has been 100% buried under books and papers ever since, as well as serving as an excellent hiding place for various hedgehogs, rabbits, and chinchillas on the loose), the china cabinets and some of the knickknacks therefrom, and the several bags of loose STUFF that I've collected. Why do I own an entire bag of wooden clothespins, unopened? Where, exactly, did this string of lights shaped like cartoon ghosts come from?

The storage unit near my house actually has a sign: "Attention Bands: Practice Space." Or something to that effect. I thought that was a rather good idea. The spaces are big enough to hold a band. And no neighbors to complain about noise. But I could so foresee a band practicing next to the guy storing antique glass. Percussion+glass=storage unit drama.
