So we were out on the bikes this afternoon. One would think that with the price of gas what it is, and people who are concerned with pollution, traffic, parking, etc. even if they don't worry about gas, there would be more bikes on the road now, but there are still few enough that we can pretty much all wave to each other.

I'll wave to just about anyone. Various makes of bike have their differences, and we might not all want to hang together at the same rally for a three-day weekend [1], but we're still all 2 wheels.

[1] A rough guide to bike stereotypes, which are not entirely baseless: Harley riders hang at biker bars, Kawi riders hang at the racetrack, Honda riders hang at luxury motels on tourist routes, and Beemer riders hang at coffee shops with wireless internet.

Since my last tank of gas included more highway riding than usual, I got 75 mpg! Honest, do the math yourself, 249.4 miles on 3.306 gallons. W00!

Maybe I can get the neighbors to take a picture of us with the bikes, for y'all's edification.

Definitely get a picture taken!

I continue to ponder getting a motorcycle when I get to Austin. Something fairly small and lightweight, but with enough of an engine to do freeways safely. I should grill you at some point about the things I'll need to consider for Austin specifically, as opposed to general motorcycle safety things that they'll teach me in a class.

Austin has so little rain, relatively speaking, and so little winter, that it is actually pretty nice for bikes, although the summer heat when one is sitting and waiting at a red light can be, um, hot. A white, full-face helmet, mesh gloves, and a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course, are what you need. That middle school on Far West, Murchison?, Rob will remember, offers the MSF courses through the Community Schools program. They have the bikes for you to use, so you don't have to buy one first.

Then I'll have to check it out when I get back to Austin. I can certainly find out if I actually like riding motorcycles, before looking seriously into acquiring one myself.

I pondered a motorcycle when I first arrived in Tasmania - easier to ride and not quite so hard to correct sides of the road, etc. Particularly since gas costs $1.30 a *litre* here. Its still not as horrific as England's prices, but its pretty damn bad.

My biggest stall was that 1) they actually have weather here - and severe stuff - and 2) I've never ridden one even as a passenger. Still mean to try someday.

Will actually be getting concert copies soon. Maybe I will drop one in the mail for you both to have a listen?
