Ho-Ho-Kus (yes, spelled exactly that way) Lake Hopatcong Hackensack (sounds like something the Vikings would do. "First we'll loot and pillage, then we'll Hackensack") Also known for the Christmas Carol "O Little Town of Hackensack" Piscataway
It was hard to choose cities - I had been thinking about having more than 4, so that I could include some of the silly Massachusetts names as well, such as Cochituit. But NY and NJ really do take the prizes for silly-sounding names. (Which is not to say that there aren't other kinds of silly names - Dime Box, Texas, for example.)
Did you mean "Cochituate" or "Cotuit"? :-) Seriously, I remember the first time my Garmin 2720 talking GPS told me to "Turn right on Cochituate Road". I was amazed that they got the pronunciation correct.
Nockamixon. Wissahickon, Mauch Chunk (now Jim Thorpe). Wyomissing. Frackville. Then you get all of the places named in Welsh: Gwynedd, Bryn Mawr, Bala Cynwyd.
I voted for Schenectady even though Poughkeepsie is a funnier place name (IMHO). My grandmother was from Schenectady and she was a very funny person. So I had to vote for it. :)
Back in Texas, once, we were attending a concert by the Longhorn Band (University of Texas) and in the program, they listed the hometown of each of the performer/students. One was listed as being from "Pokipsy," New York.
That's sweet. It's a lot less of a cliche than the usual honey-bunny! (S and I refer to each other as wombats when we're burrowing under the covers, since we saw a special years ago about wombats burrowing under house foundations. So there's your TMI tit for tat.)
