I don't see anything odd here; I learned as a kid reading Ernest Thompson Seton that a mother cottontail will attack a snake that's threatening her babies, and can do it a fair amount of damage by kicking with her rear claws.

Oh, I know - I'm the one with permanent scars on my arms from rabbit attacks by seriously pissed-off bunnies. I know they are fiercely protective of their territories. But most people don't know, and it's partly the poor snake, who didn't know either, and partly the astonishment of the other humans, that makes this so funny. Poor snake!
