Well, after all this time, Catonsville is once again on the crime page of the paper - due to a fatal car crash. It was not far from our house - about half a mile away. None of the two killed nor three injured (in a total of three vehicles) were from Catonsville, but the crash took place in Catonsville, so... The two dead guys were not wearing seat belts. (That'll teach 'em.)

Sigh! Actually, I think they're beyond being taught anything at this point. The incident will go into the vast heap of examples of how this 'low cost-high reward' action can affect your safety. We would hope that people who are still alive could be taught something, though it was resistance to seat belt use that originally brought us the passive (and expensive) airbag solution, for front-impact collisions anyway. More bags in the car (and more cost) has improved their effectiveness across a broader range of accident scenarios, but as far as their ultimate potential, I am still skeptical that bags could be ramped up to deliver at a comparable cost anything like the astounding results demonstrated by maximized belts when a race car hits the wall at 150 MPH.
