We came home from lunch to discover that a tree had fallen into the street; one of our neighbors had their teenage son cutting down a tree instead of a trained arborist, and... anyway, we stood out there talking to the neighbor - gossip about other neighbors' dogs and their bad behavior - and watching the kid trying to figure out how to trim the tree back so that it wouldn't finish crushing the fence entirely, nor the car parked at that end of the block. Good luck to him. (These are our sort-of-in-back neighbors, whose lot runs through to next to our house - their house is on the other side of the block, but their driveway is from our street.) So I've had more than my share of heat and sunshine - probably enough vitamin D for all of August!

[livejournal.com profile] the_curmudgn and his wife and younger daughter stopped in for a visit yesterday. They live in Austin - and we knew them before LJ was a gleam in anyone's eye - but were visiting L's relatives up here near Baltimore. So there was pool splashage and cobbler eating, and 5-year-old M had a great deal of fun with all our stuffed animals - she had trouble deciding whether the sting-ray or the ring-tailed lemur was her favorite. It's good to see friends who completely understand our decorating scheme of books and papers on every flat surface, and to talk fiber-y stuff with L, who is headed from here to a sewing conference in Washington DC at the end of the week. (Similar to the knitting conference I went to a couple weeks ago - although probably fewer people practicing their craft in hotel lobbies, since it's harder to set up a sewing machine on a lobby sofa than it is a crochet hook or pair of knitting needles.)

We've made a start on preparations for Saturday's pool party: purchase of a grill, and of the mini-bottles of propane to run it, and of pool floats and a screen tent for shade on the deck, and of some of the groceries. I need to get buns and bread, and regular yellow mustard for the kids, who are unlikely to want Dijon mustard or horseradish sauce on their food. When it cools off after dark, more straightening up of the basement! Thrills! But that'll probably be tomorrow evening, not tonight, 'cause we have a music-sorting gathering for the Montgomery Village Community Band tonight.
