Things I have been musing upon
Jul. 8th, 2005 05:05 pm1. Why can't writers do a better job of avoiding anachronisms? It's not THAT esoteric to know that in the early 19th century, pretty much all sciences were referred to as "natural history" - students at Cambridge in the first half of the 1800's did not study "physics" and "chemistry" and "biology."
2. After 3 weeks in Maryland, what do I think so far?
The state really needs to put up more signs for its numbered routes. What is the point of having numbered routes if you don't label them?
We tried travelling on the interstate and the Baltimore Beltway at rush hour last Friday. Not bad at all - moved along better than IH-35 in Austin does at that time of day! Austin really is as bad as people think - when we were driving to get up here, we wound up going through Dallas at rush hour, and it wasn't as bad as Austin. On the other hand, nothing else seems to be as bad as the Beltway - the one around WashingtonDC. And there's no good way to get south of here without spending at least a few miles on the Beltway.
It is 79 degrees today, as the high temperature. It's almost the middle of July. Need I say more?
So far we haven't found any really good Chinese food. Decent pizza, yes. Excellent Thai, yes. The best bread pudding I have ever tasted, yes. But good Chinese food? No. Despite the plethora of Chinese places everywhere, most are take-out only, and the ones we've tried have been stunningly bland and/or gloppy.
3. I forget what else I was going to write about.
