Other less exciting things - we went to the symphony concert Friday evening, with our friend Cindy - her birthday, so we treated her to a ticket, and followed the concert with a dessert splurge. While Peter Serkin did a nice job with the Mozart D Minor piano concerto, the real hit of the concert was the Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances.
Which leads me to tell you about the time, many years ago, when my brothers and sisters and I were all still drawing names to exchange Christmas presents. One of my sisters drew my brother Gene's name, and looked at the list he had given of things he'd like, which included CDs of classical music that was "uplifting and dramatic." So she called me, as the music maven, to ask: what does "uplifting and dramatic" mean? So I explained: FAST and LOUD.
"Symphonic Dances" is definitely uplifting and dramatic. In fact, the Russians from 1850 to 1950 are about your best bets in the guaranteed uplifting and dramatic department.
Anyway. Last night was Games Night. And potluck. We had potato salad and fruit salad and chips and dip - potluck rarely turns out to be a balanced meal. We played Blokus, which I had never played before; I'm not very good at it, but it's fun and fairly fast. And A to Z, which among all the games I've ever met, has the distinction of having the single most annoying timer every made. I mean, it is difficult to convey how annoying the timer is. So after a while, we got S to program the PDA as a timer, and abandoned the one that came with the game. If you would like a timer that will scare small children and give nervous adults heart attacks, I will send you that timer, OK?
Now off to find supper.
