About the only work of his I have any chance of recognizing is the 'Saber Dance'. Definitely need more exposure to classical.

Khatchaturian uses unique chords; once you've listened to a bunch of his stuff, it becomes unmistakeable. The 20th century Russians are an interesting lot to listen to; catch Prokofiev's film scores, Khatchaturian's ballets, and Shostakovich's overtures. Compare Tschaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet ballet music to Prokofiev's.
