Nov. 20th, 2004 03:02 pmSo here we are in Seattle. Yes, of course I brought my laptop, and the hotel has free internet access.
We got into the airport just before 8:00 last night, and had to be at the hotel for a rehearsal at 8:45. We were a couple minutes late, having to check into our hotel first and then sprint across 8 lanes of local street - even with a crossing light, it was a wiiide street - with our horns, to the conference hotel. The rehearsal went great. It was good to see Lynn Klock again. We're gonna knock them back on their socks!
Both my sax and spousal unit's tuba came through the airlines OK. We had the TSA do a hand inspection of them while we were still standing there, before they were checked. They recommend getting to the airport a half hour early if you want that. Then they let you lock the cases. The hard case for the tenor sax weighs more than the horn does. (As does the hard case for the tuba.) So for rehearsal, we left the cases in our hotel room and just walked across the street carrying the instruments.
The tuba mute had to be carry-on luggage on the plane, since it has no case and is far too fragile to be checked luggage. If I had a dollar for every time we had to answer a question about "What the heck is That!?!??" while in airports and in hotel lobby, we could have had lobster for supper. The sax is certainly much more ordinary looking. Although there are still days when I wish I had taken up an instrument that came in only two pieces and could be carried in a tote bag. Trumpet, say, or flute. Spousal unit's tuba comes in only 2 pieces, of course, but it certainly ain't tote bag material.
Anyway, off to see some of Seattle before tonight's 10:15 rehearsal!!!
