Cartoon in the New Yorker depicts hell - pit of fire, devil with pitchfork in background. Several groups of people standing around chatting, like any party. Foreground: disgruntled-looking guy, arms folded. Woman saying to him: "You're never going to be happy if your only definition of success is Heaven."

Why am I thinking of [livejournal.com profile] landley?

Possibly for the same reason you feel the need to respond to every bad thing I describe about my experience in Pittsburgh with something bad I never encountered in Austin. (Because I only lived there for ten years, so obviously I'm unfamiliar with it. And apparently, I haven't given Pittsburgh a chance, after all I haven't stayed long enough to make even one suicide attempt so obviously I'm not taking it seriously...)

Yeah, it got a little old, even before

Ok, having read the description of the cartoon more closely, I overreacted. Sorry 'bout that.

(I have new glasses. I can see the far end of the street clearly. Reading my laptop is now annoying because I have to focus _close_ for the first time in years. Yeah, I should have gotten new glasses sooner.)

my apologies, friend. I only worry about you. Forgive me my sense of humor, please?

Sorry, I was irritable this morning and overreacted. (Sore throat, hyperkinetic kitten waking us up a half dozen times, and starting my first new pair of glasses in years this morning with a heck of an adjustment period.)

You're not the only one who responds to my occasional "I hate pittsburgh" outburst with variants of "how much better is Austin, really?" Fade dislikes the heat and doesn't want to be anywhere near UT again (drunken frat boys scare her). Cathy and some of the Michigan crowd are disappointed I'm moving farther away (which is flattering).

When I read this (waaaaay behind on my livejournal friends list, again) my new glasses were giving me enough trouble (must focus close again and I apparently forgot how to do that) I just read the very beginning and the very end, missed the middle. The context in which the advice was given does change the nature of the advice. :)

Sorry for overreacting.

whoops, somewhere I missed something? You're moving?

Fade no doubt has already told you we can't make it to Penguicon - both budget and timewise, our only trip in April MUST be back to Austin to visit Steve's dad, the week of the 22-28th of April. So, I'm mailing you a wedding present (a small one, as a larger one takes time.) But - you're moving??

When the lease on the current apartment expires in August, we're not renewing it. I just switched jobs (got a 1-year fellowship from the Linux Foundation to do documentation) so I'm telecommuting for the next year anyway. The big limiting factor to our mobility is cats, really...

Yah, I finally remembered to go check your own web page, and caught up on the news there, but thank you for the timeline on the moving - so i can send your wedding present to Pgh, and we'll still get a couple more chances to visit you (and or vice versa) before you move a kilomile further away again.
